Chapter 16

Jett is the first to pull away.

To say he looks uneasy is an understatement.

“Go ahead and eat up. Then I’ll show you to your room for the night. We can talk tomorrow,” he tells me.

“Why not tonight?”

“I have something I need to tend to,” he hedges.

I debate whether to call him out on his lie, but I know he won’t tell me the truth, so I change the topic.

“So, what do you call this lovely place? The Singed Château?”

“The Onyx Abyss.”

“I like it. Very moody and goth. Did you go through an emo phase? I can see you in some tight black jeans and black eyeliner.”

He stares at me blankly.

“Never mind, sorry. Uplander gibberish.”

I push the soup around in the bowl, feeling awkward for the first time.

When I look back up, Jett is staring at me intently again.

“Don’t apologize. This is. . . nice. It’s been a long time since anyone’s eaten dinner with me,” he admits.

“Maybe if you didn’t eat them first,” I tease without thinking and instantly Jett’s face shuts down.

Damn my mouth.

I keep stuffing it with my foot.

“I was kidding. I have off-color humor,” I joke.

“It’s ok. No one likes me. I can’t expect someone like you to like me,” he says glumly.

“Someone like me?”

“Pure, white.”

I snort.

“I’m pretty sure my hair tells a different story.”

Jett purses his lips, taking in my rainbow hair, before cracking a smile.

“Touché,” he says with a naughty smirk that makes my stomach flutter.

Jett shoots me a hungry look.

Not ‘I’m going to eat your soul’ hungry, but ‘I want to eat your pink taco’ hungry. All I can think is how much I wouldn’t mind tasting his dark hot sauce.

I’m seriously questioning my sanity here. . .

Should I be this attracted to Death?

In the distance, the rumble of thunder seems to pop the bubble of lust around Jett and me. He stands up swiftly, pulling my chair out for me, and dragging me from the dining room. I trot behind him, trying to keep up. We weave through the halls until we come to a door.

“You’ll be safe here, but don’t try to come out,” he warns.

Jett opens the door and pushes me unceremoniously into an all-black room, before slamming the door shut again. I hear the snick of a lock. Jett is clearly a better jailer than my rainbow men. I cringe at my possessive use of ‘my’. I’m already thinking of those colorful jerks as mine.

I walk around the room, which is the complete opposite of the one I had at the Prism Palace. It’s black on black on black on black. Only a fire burning quietly in the corner chimney offers light. Colibrí pops into existence beside me.

“Colibrí! I wondered where you went off to. Holy shit, you can teleport, can’t you? You’re pretty amazing, you know that?”

The pretty little bird flaps his wings happily as if to say he knows and agrees.

“What do you think we should do?”

Colibrí flies over to the bed and settles on the pillow.

“Sleep?! You think we should sleep?”

I yawn at the idea.
